I was asked to make a video about what inspires the designs for my handmade jewelry and accessories. It wasn't easy to put down my tools, step away from the studio, look at my work over the past 15 years, and find words to describe my creative process. Inspired by the Iron Age cloak fasteners, I started making penannular brooches, which are 2-piece shawl pins. Because the pin stem is attached to the outer ring, you won't lose the pin stem, and the brooch lays flat against the material, allowing a scarf or shawl to drape well. So I started making hairpins because I needed to get the hair out of my face when soldering. And if I was going to make hairpins, they had to be both functional and decorative. I make a variety of hairpins, including twisted wire hairpins, because the twists in the wire secure fine or slippery hair, without damaging the hair.
